About

Mat Beale

Independent life sciences and health tech consultant, based in the UK. Enterprise presales, a B2B company built and run for seven years, and an MSc in Biotechnology with applied machine-learning research in medical imaging.

I started in enterprise software: seven years and counting in B2B SaaS presales and solutions consulting. That is the job where you translate a technical product for sceptical buyers with budgets on the line, in the room where deals are won or lost.

In 2017 I co-founded a B2B technical infrastructure company and ran it until 2024: product, engineering and sales, end to end. Building a company teaches the parts consultants usually haven't done themselves: pricing under pressure, shipping within constraints, and selling what exists rather than what's promised.

Then I moved deliberately into life sciences: an MSc in Biotechnology at the University of Reading, with a machine-learning dissertation in medical imaging conducted in clinical collaboration with an NHS hospital. Not a career change, but an expansion of range into the domain where I want to do my best work.

Consulting is also a people job. Most of my career has been spent in front of customers, at conferences and in boardrooms, so I am comfortable being the face of a product: friendly, confident and credible with technical and commercial audiences alike. Clients tend to be happy putting me in front of their own.

The result is an unusual profile: someone who can sit with your scientists in the morning, your engineers in the afternoon and your buyers the day after, and be useful in all three rooms.

Beyond the CV

Interests and side projects

The domains I care about personally tend to be the ones I end up building in.

Health & fitness

Interested enough to build and run a product in the space. FitTools exists because these were tools I wanted in the world.

Machine learning in medicine

The dissertation topic was a deliberate choice: imaging models a clinician can interrogate, not black boxes asking for trust.
